The short version

There is no account to create and nothing to sign in to with us.
Backup My AI Chat has no server that receives your conversations. Exported files go to your Downloads folder and auto-saved files go to the folder you choose.
We do not sell, rent or share your data, because we do not receive it.
You can remove the extension at any time. The files it saved stay on your disk; they are yours.

What the extension handles

To export or auto-save a conversation, Backup My AI Chat reads that conversation from the AI site you are signed in to, in your own browser, using your existing sign-in. This is website content in the sense of the Chrome Web Store policy. It is processed on your device and written to your device. It is not collected or transmitted by us.

The extension does not ask for and does not see your passwords or API keys. It works with the browser sessions you already have open.

Permissions and why they are needed

When you install Backup My AI Chat, Chrome lists what it may use. Each item has one purpose:

The AI chat sites you use: to read your own conversations there so they can be exported and saved. Nothing is sent anywhere else.
Storage: to keep your settings and the saved chats that the side panel and Bulk Export list. They stay in this browser and are never synced elsewhere.
Downloads: to save exported files to your Downloads folder.
Active tab: to read the chat you are exporting from.
Alarms: to run Auto-save on the schedule you choose.
Right-click menu: to add the export actions to the menu on chat pages.
Side panel: to show your saved chats in the browser's side panel.
Two image file servers (optional): to download images that ChatGPT and Grok keep on a separate host. Asked for only when you click Allow access on the Auto-save page; without it, those images are noted in the text instead.

What is stored, and where

Settings and saved chats are kept in the extension's own storage in your browser, on your device, so that the side panel and Bulk Export can list them. A chat gets there when you export it, add it to the side panel, or when Auto-save saves it. Chats you exported one by one are cleared after a retention period you choose (1 day, 7 days by default, 30 days, or kept); auto-saved chats stay until you clear them. This storage is never synced to another device, and removing the extension removes it.
Exported files (PDF, Word, Markdown, text, JSON, image) are saved to your Downloads folder.
Auto-saved chats are written as Markdown files to the one folder you picked. Apart from exports and the diagnostic report, which go to Downloads, the extension writes only to that folder, and you can change it at any time.
The diagnostic report, if you choose to save one, goes to your Downloads folder. It describes how each AI service responded and contains no chat text and no chat titles. It is not sent anywhere; you decide whether to share it.

This website

This website is a set of static pages. It sets no cookies, has no sign-up or contact form, and loads no advertising or tracking scripts. Like any website, the server that hosts it receives your IP address and browser details when you load a page, as part of delivering the page.

If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write, and use them only to reply to you.

Other services

Backup My AI Chat works with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek and Microsoft Copilot. What those services do with your conversations is governed by their own privacy policies and terms, not by this one. Backup My AI Chat is an independent tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any AI provider. Each service's terms restrict automated access to some degree, and none of them has approved this tool.

The extension is installed and updated through the Chrome Web Store, which is run by Google.

Chrome Web Store Limited Use

The use of information received by Backup My AI Chat adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. The extension uses the content of the AI chat pages you open for one purpose only: to export and save your own conversations at your request. That content is not transferred to anyone, is not used for advertising, and is not read by any person other than you.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page changes with it. Material changes to what the extension does with data will also be described in the Chrome Web Store listing.
